“I’d ridden him in a double bridle for years,” said Julie Anthony of her 17.3hh gelding. “But although he had a nice outline, his back end was not performing. So I put him back in a snaffle and I’ve been trying to make him quicker and stronger behind — basically using less hand and more leg to get his engine working.

“He’s a big horse and fairly laid-back, so it can be difficult to keep him front of the leg,” said Julie, a retired police officer. “This time, the judge said he looked willing. It’s been a steep learning curve, but an enjoyable one.”

Victoria Jenner’s 19-year-old gelding Ratio produced a winning prix st georges performance at Beacons Equestrian after a year on the sidelines.

“It’s been one of those years,” said Victoria, referring to a long spell dogged by illness. “We didn’t get to a single competition. Finally, I’ve been able to spend a couple of months getting him fit.”

Victoria, who trains with Ulrik Molgaard, was surprised by Ratio’s enthusiasm.

“I had thought that perhaps it was time to retire him, but he came off the trailer like a fouryear-old with his eyes out on stalks,” she said. “He’s back on form.”
