TAKING OUT COVER
CLAIRE BARKER of PRP Rescue Services shared her tips:
Ask plenty of questions before paying and if necessary ask to be shown where you can find clarification in the terms and conditions
Make sure professional, authorised horse transport will be provided should your horse need recovery
Professional horse transport companies must be authorised by Defra and hold appropriate certification and insurance. Horse transporters’ vehicles weighing over 3.5 tonnes are also subject to goods vehicle operator licensing rules
While vehicle recovery companies provide a fantastic service, they are not horse transporters and their line of business does not require them to have livestock transport authorisation
Transferring horses to a replacement vehicle at roadside should be done with road closures arranged by the police or Highways Authority. Your breakdown service should be able to arrange this
Prepare for the unexpected when travelling with horses – however short the journey. Take any equipment which you may need to load your horse, just in case your lorry or trailer does need recovery.
