BD TAKE ACTION!
Sir — Further to Pammy Hutton’s opinion (1 March), when the first year of gold, silver and bronze levels came into being, there was uproar about combinations in the wrong section (silver mainly). Be patient, we were told, while people find their correct level.
But at the summer novice regionals two years ago, we were competing against a professional in a huge class who was also doing the prix st georges. And this year when qualifying for novice and
elementary, there were yet more large silver classes. When you add up the cost of entry fees, stabling and fuel, this is a significant outlay to a one-horse amateur, who realises that the chances of a top placing are remote.
Many amateur silver riders are now becoming disengaged and losing their enthusiasm to qualify, which will ultimately be to the detriment of local venues and the sport. So I implore British Dressage (BD) to take action, as this system is not working.
Stuart Matthews Stourport-on-Severn, Worcs BD sport operations director Tamsyn Cowie replies: “We’d like to assure members that we acknowledge the ongoing concerns about elements of the competition structure and do listen to all the feedback we receive. This is part of an ongoing review and close monitoring of the numbers competing at each level to ensure that we have the right balance in each of the sections.
“We’re aware that there remain issues that need to be addressed, including a potential gap between Area Festivals and regionals in the silver section. The numbers continue to increase and standards are rising, but we are committed to establishing a fair competition structure that offers opportunities for all.
“This will be on the agenda for discussion at the next board meeting following the winter championships next month, ahead of the annual rules review by our sport operations committee. Competitors are encouraged to send their thoughts and constructive suggestions to feedback@ britishdressage.co.uk”
