HUNT HISTORY

-

Sir — Out of respect to the memory of my late husband’s time as master of the Four Burrow, I wanted to clarify what happened at the hunt in the 1980s.

Captain Farquhar (29 March) refers to an “unsettled period within the hunt until Paul Hancock arrived in 1982”. The period he refers to was from 1977-1980, when the mastership changed twice. In 1980, my late husband Bruce Warren and Trevor Burley were appointed joint-masters, with Trevor hunting hounds.

Two years later, with a now resolved situation, Paul Hancock began service with the Four Burrow as kennel huntsman/first whipper-in under these jointmasters. In 1984, Trevor Burley stepped down, Bruce Warren continued as sole master with

Paul Hancock hunting hounds and, on my husband’s retirement in 1990, Paul Hancock became joint-master with Heather Hunt.

The full history of the hunt from 1 January 1780 until 1990 can be read in the book Hunting with the Four Burrow, written by Kathryn Pearn.
