TRAVELLING RIGHT?

-

Sir — I found your article on horseboxes and trailers informative (29 March). It is also useful to be aware of payload.

Most 3.5 tonne horseboxes can only legally carry two small ponies or one horse when two people and equipment are included. But the number of these lorries seen carrying two 16hh-plus horses is worrying, not only because it’s illegal but because the breaking capacity of the vehicle has not been designed for this weight.

Surely the best option for those with two or more horses is to have an economical car and invest in a 7.5 tonne lorry, knowing your horses are travelling safely? Ruaraidh Stewart

The Organisation of Horsebox & Trailer Owners replies: “It is so important to consider payload. As well as many of the popular 3.5 tonne vehicles having a small payload, the same can also apply to 7.5 tonne vehicles — especially older vehicles and those with more elaborate living accommodation and large water tanks.

“Many 7.5 tonne vehicles are stalled for three horses plus living, but we know of cases where the payload has not been sufficient for even two average-sized horses. Therefore, the payload must be checked carefully at a weighbridge. The lorry should be empty except for a full tank of fuel. Subtract this weight from the Maximum Authorised Mass (MAM) or Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) of the vehicle and you have your payload.

“But, consider carefully how much kit and how many passengers you might carry in addition to your horses.”
