LOCAL HEROES FINISH WITH CLEARS

MASSIVE cheers erupted when both Richard Jones (pictured) and Willa Newton showjumped clear, giving them seventh and eighth places respectively on Alfies Clover and Chance Remark.

Both live close to Burghley — Richard near Oakham and Willa near Melton Mowbray — and were in local branches of the Pony Club. This was a best British four-star result for both, although Willa was fifth at Luhmühlen in June.

“I’m over the moon,” said Richard. “I walked the course with Mark Kyle and rode it as I walked it, which worked out perfectly. My horse has a big stride but he is adjustable and has loads of scope.”
