Good luck, Team GBR!

BY the time this issue is published, the World Equestrian Games (WEG) in Tryon will be in full swing. The hole in the cross-country course will have long since been filled, the opening ceremony a rousing masterpiece, and all those concerns people raised about the readiness of the venue will have proved unfounded — so we hope.

Who knows, President Trump may have even turned up. I’m not sure this would be a blessing as such, but all publicity is good publicity. Or, far better, Bruce Springsteen, who it was rumoured might perform in an opening or closing ceremony — on account of his daughter being a top US showjumper, which I grant you is a tenuous link.

Speaking of top showjumpers in America, I had the opportunity to interview US-based British leading lady rider and first time championship showjumper Amanda Derbyshire for this week’s issue. Amanda appears to lead a charmed existence, working for the Gochman family, who have supported her with fantastic horses to achieve her dream of riding on a British team at WEG.

One gets the feeling then that Amanda is the sort of hardworking talent that someone might want to do that for, and therefore someone we’re excited to support. Amanda is a breath of fresh air for the sport in the UK, even if she resides in the USA.

We look forward to watching and bringing you all the action from WEG, and fully expect Britain’s players will triumph. We wish them all the very best.
