WHAT NEXT FOR WEG?
THE FEI is to undertake a “very clear” assessment of WEG, with a view to possible adaptations to its format in future.
In a press conference, the FEI was asked whether “the WEG concept has reached its sell-by date”.
“Non-Olympic disciplines have drawn the short straw before at WEGs and suffered from sub-standard facilities and courses, though nowhere as bad as Tryon,” stated one guest. “Isn’t it time to reintroduce stand-alone championships at venues that know what they’re doing?”
FEI president Ingmar de Vos answered: “We need to make a very clear assessment of these Games and understand their future. We still have interest from organisers to run them but yes, we need to look at the concept; maybe to make some adaptations to the format.
“After Caen [2014], we made a full assessment and concluded everyone wanted WEG. We will make assessments and consult a lot of people. There are several options and it’s too early to comment.”
