Tobago is triumphant

Daniel Deusser takes his second World Cup victory this season while the Brits also find winning form

GERMANY’S Daniel Deusser celebrated his second World Cup victory this season when topping a strong field in Madrid, Spain, on Sunday riding Tobago Z. In the sixth leg of the Western European League series, 10 combinations made it through to the jump-off, in which Daniel and the 10-yearold stallion son of Tangelo VD Zuuthoeve pinged home half a second quicker than Steve Guerdat (Ulysse Des Forets) and Sweden’s Irma Karlsson back in third riding Ida Van De Bisschop.

“Tobago is very careful and very scopey, and he’s not a hot horse so that really helps in the jump-off because he never rushes, even when he’s under pressure,” said Daniel. “You get the same jump-off whether you’re going fast or slow.”

The German rider and Steve Guerdat, who tops the rankings, have already accumulated enough points to book a place in the Final in Gothenburg in April.

Great Britain’s Laura Renwick said she was “proud” of Bintang II jumping round for just four faults in round one of the World Cup at their first indoor show of the year. The previous day, the Essex rider won a 1.45m speed class with the very exciting Dublin V, collecting €8,250 (£7,270). The pair also finished third in Friday’s six-bar, which resulted in a tie for top honours between Ireland’s Denis Lynch (All Star) and JohanSebastian Gulliksen of Norway riding Arakorn.

Great Britain’s Emily Moffitt (Winning Good) finished third in Sunday’s 1.45m jump-off class.
