HORSE PRODUCTION, PHILLIPPS-STYLE
Vere likes simple bits like a rubbercovered pelham or a loose-ring eggbutt snaffle. “I saw one, liked it and had it copied,” says Vere. “You never stop learning in this game. As my father used to say, ‘If you think you know nothing, you’re on the brink of wisdom.’”
Vere’s feeding practices are similarly traditional, including home-grown hay and oats. “A chap came discussing supplements with me once and asked, ‘What do you balance them with?’ I replied, ‘Work!’”
Horses hack all round the farm, so they never grow accustomed to certain routes and start getting nappy.
Each horse finishes its work with a Polo, wash-off and often a few minutes’ grazing in hand.
