5 minutes with National Hunt jockey Jamie Moore on cooking and his love for rap music

The jump jockey on whisking up a mean omelette, a penchant for rap and the exciting star on the yard

- As told to Hannah Lemieux

What’s the best or last book you’ve read?

It was probably back when I was at school and being forced to read a book! Although I did enjoy the children’s series of The Famous Five books when I was younger. These days, I stick to reading Horse & Hound and Racing Post – that is enough for me.

What are your favourite tunes for a road-trip?

I listen to all sorts. I love 80s music and Heart 80s Radio will always be on in the car, but I also enjoy 90s rap music. I have seen Snoop Dogg twice, once in London and once in Brighton, and I also like American hip-hop trio The Sugarhill Gang – you probably need to Google them!

What was your first pony?

An 11hh Welsh pony called George when I was five. He was fast, but he refused to jump, so we stuck to local gymkhanas with the Southdown Hunt East branch of the Pony Club.

Which famous person would you invite to dinner?

Tennis star Rodger Federer – he’s so smooth, humble and very good at what he does; I could learn a lot from him. He comes across as such a nice person, too.

If you weren’t a jockey, you would be…

It’s a hard question – I’ve only ever wanted to be a jockey. I want to say something else sportrelated, or something that involves adrenaline like a snowboarder, but I know I would probably have ended up being a builder.

What’s your favourite country?

America. I’ve enjoyed the best holidays there, including to Miami, New York and Las Vegas. Once my race-riding career is over, I’d love to do more travelling through the States, and driving Route 66 is definitely on my wish list.

What’s your most annoying habit?

I’m sure my wife, Lucie, would say I am perfect! But probably the fact I say “you know” too much or that I am always trying to run before I can walk – I should learn to be more patient in life.

Do you have any pets?

No, I have three children and their ponies keep us busy enough. Although I have told the kids we can get a dog one day. I would probably go for a breed like a Rhodesian ridgeback.

How have you coped during the coronavirus crisis?

We have around 70 dual-purpose racehorses currently in training at Dad’s yard in West Sussex, so I have been busy riding out each morning.

Lucie has been in charge of the home-schooling and I haven’t got too involved with that. I did attempt a geography lesson and I have been the PE teacher too, but my children never seem to listen to me. It’s the same when I teach them to ride, they listen to their auntie Hayley, but not me.
