“I BROKE MY BACK IN SIX PLACES”
AGAINST THE ODDS
FOXHUNTER runners-up Danielle Ryder and Sam VD Tojopehoeve Z (pictured) went one better on the final day to win the Lord & Lady Equestrian senior newcomers title. The talented eightyear-old, whom Danielle co-owns with Willem van Hoof and Harrie Smolders, sped across the jump-off course with his ground-eating stride to bag victory with close to two seconds to spare.
“This time last year I was in hospital as I had broken my back in six places,” said Danielle, who broke her T12 and L1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 in a “simple fall” from a young horse.
“Sam is abnormally careful. He is very competitive and doesn’t take a lot of encouragement as he wants to win.
“I think the courses have been very good – there were more clears today than other days – and I knew the jump-off was going to be fast before we started so there was only one way to go!”
