Red Indian wins by 50 lengths

The first meeting of the season sees a gelding return to form, while a home-bred mare wins on her debut

EIGHT-YEAR-OLD Red Indian won by an impressive 50 lengths when taking the ladies’ open to give trainer Mimi Eggleston her first winner for owner Sir Johnny Weatherby at the first meeting of the season.

Ridden by Alice Stevens, the gelding made the win look easy.

“We thought Alice had gone a circuit too soon, but he was loving it out there, towing her along, and he just cantered home,” explained Mimi. “He is an easy horse to do and always tries his best.”

The gelding, by Sulamani, was bred by the Weatherbys and orphaned as a foal.

“His dam died during foaling, so he had a Connemara pony foster dam,” said Mimi, who works for the Weatherby’s trainer Kelly Morgan and started training Red Indian earlier this year. “They adore him, and he’ll never go anywhere else.”

Red Indian previously ran under Rules for Ben Pauling but was brought home to train under Kelly once she received her licence.

“After an impressive start, he lost his way a bit and we never got him back to that form, so we decided it would be a good idea to give him a few spins pointing to give him his confidence back,” said Mimi. “It worked as he won easily – a step down in class was what he needed. He’ll stay pointing and possibly go hunter chasing.”

Bloodstock agent and trainer Thomas Malone enjoyed a double when landing the hunt members with Art Mauresque under Will Biddick for owner Johnny de la Hey, followed by the second division of the six-year-old and over maiden with his own Starsky, also under Will Biddick.

“He was loving it out there”
