Ponies pack a punch
Munstead (1), Surrey
TWO pint-sized ponies put their bigger rivals firmly in their places at Munstead (1).
Abi Scott and her 14hh Welsh sport pony Camarnaint Rambler (Barney) sailed to BE90 victory, finishing on their dressage score of 23.8.
“I have produced Barney over the past six years since he was a five-year-old and I was 11,” said Abi, who turned 17 the week before Munstead. “He’s a real character – he’s barely 14hh but he likes to think he’s a lot bigger. As soon as we pull up at an event he announces his arrival with a loud whinny and he does the same at the end of the cross-country.”
Lizzie Forbes and her 14.1hh former trotter, Rosie XIII, continued their purple patch from last year with victory in a BE100.
The pair, who won two out of their four events last season, added two cross-country timepenalties to a dressage score of 25.
“She really knows her job now,” said Lizzie, who has owned the mare for five-and-a-half years and continues to find new ways to improve her weakest pace, the canter.
“In her former ‘career’ Rosie didn’t have to canter at all, so it has taken a long time for her to gain balance and strength. There is one particular pole exercise

that I have found is really useful. I put two poles on the ground five or six strides apart and then practise adding and subtracting the number of strides in between them. It really helps her adjustability.”
