FURTHER to your online news story about the passing of “one in a million” Olympic eventer Welton Envoy (27 April), I worked for his owners – Sam and Linda Barr – many years ago and remember “Eddie” well. He was a kind and gentle horse. He was beautifully schooled and was a joy to ride.

It became an annual ritual in his latter years to give him a haircut. As with most older horses, he failed to moult fully in the summer, so each year I paid Linda a visit with my clippers.

Eddie always thought he was going eventing again when his hair was oˆ and he’d had a bath. Usually a sedate and quiet horse, after his haircut he turned into an excitable beast.

It always made us smile that in less than an hour, he could go from being an elderly gentleman to looking like a Œt four-star horse bucking around a paddock. I bet he’s up there jumping the clouds now!
