Worker fence size changes spark debate in showing

Proposed changes to spread width for some pony classes were the hottest topic at a members’ meeting

- By ALEX ROBINSON

THE increase in spread sizes for mountain and moorland (M&M) working hunter ponies was a hot topic at the British Show

Pony Society (BSPS) members’ conference on 19 January.

The increase in spread widths, by different amounts, for M&M Heritage working hunter ponies is among the most contentious BSPS 2022 rule changes.

Council member Philip Hilton said this came from “pleading” course-builders, judges and riders, who had noted a lack of challenge in classes at championship shows.

“These are performance classes and competitors should expect to be challenged,” he said. “Many are on sand and the level of competition is only increasing. However, the BSPS has taken communication on board and will review this rule if it does not work.

“There will only be one spread at the maximum [size] in the course. This will not be part of a combination and will be towards the end of the course. I’ve seen very capable ponies on the circuit; we encourage competitors to give it a go and welcome feedback.”

Member Christine Pearsall said the over-143cm section was rapidly becoming a “Connemara class”, and the increase would discourage entries from other breeds. Competitor Freya Cade said while Heritage novice classes consistently receive strong entries, open and restricted ranks lack numbers and the change would deter people more. She suggested “clever lines and increasing technicalities instead of putting a big back rail on a spread”.

BSPS council member Paul Cook said a decision will be made at the judges’ conference next month, taking into account advice from native breed societies and judges, and members’ feelings.

The new winter worker stakes classes for 2022 were welcomed.

“We were concerned about the lack of ponies coming through working hunter classes so a plan was hatched to encourage young ponies with no pressure,” said Mr Hilton. “The classes have no rider age limit so siblings, trainers and parents can introduce a pony to competition. The marking system will be skewed towards the jumping phase and there will be no mark for breed type.”

Mr Hilton announced a new rule that competitors who want to ride at the working hunter pony finals at the Royal International Horse Show (RIHS) must have ridden in two qualifiers first, to improve the standard of riding.

During 2022, qualifiers and finals will continue without a marking system and judges will be given guidance.

Dawn Christie reinforced the importance of being aware of antidoping rules brought in last year.

“Ignorance of the rules is unacceptable,” she said. “Societies are standing side by side against doping so please be aware.”

The BSPS advised members to be aware of the pros and cons of social media and to “pause and consider if a post will cause harm, distress or will be derogatory” before they publish.
