HOUSE BEAUTIFUL SAYS…
‘Setting ornate pattern and accessories against glossy white furniture is a great modernising idea.’
How much work have you done to the house?
When I moved in the decoration wasn’t to my taste. The first thing I did was paint everywhere white and then over the years I’ve been working my way through the house updating each room in turn. But I wanted to get going on the loft straightaway.
What did you have in mind?
The main intention was to make it much lighter throughout, and to bring a more sophisticated and stylish feel overall.
Describe your inspiration for the scheme
I came across an elegant gold wallpaper and thought it would be a good starting point and a way of adding glamour. Two walls were wallpapered while the other two were painted. After careful thought I decided on a stone-grey shade, which linked well with the wallpaper and could also be used throughout the rest of the house to create a cohesive look.

My priority was to have as much storage as possible while maintaining a minimal look. I found flat-fronted white glossy wardrobes for a really great price and a chest of drawers and bedside tables that match brilliantly. The simple white bed fitted in perfectly as the focal point to the room under the eaves against the gold wallpaper.
The finishing touches look great…
All the accessories are white and gilt. And I made a feature of my Nana’s poems, which she wrote for me when I was younger, and mounted them in gilt frames from junk shops.
Is the ensuite new?
The existing bathroom fittings were fine but I painted the walls dark grey to make it more dramatic.
Who did the work?
A decorator came to carry out the wallpapering work but I managed to tackle the painting myself.
How do you like the room now?
It feels a lot more spacious and light due to the simple layout – it’s become a much more restful space.
