‘Enjoy the convenience of keeping an eye on your home from your smartphone, wherever you are,’ says James Frame, sales manager at Samsung Hanwha Techwin

Why choose one of these over a traditional security system?

Traditional CCTV system installation can involve metres of cables and drilling holes throughout your property. A smart home security camera on the other hand is easy to set up – all you need to know is how to use a smartphone, tablet or computer and your Wi-Fi password. Once connected, you can see and hear what’s going on in your home whenever you want via your smart device.

So when should we choose a traditional system over a smart home security camera?

The overall convenience of smart cameras does tend to leave traditional DVR-type CCTV systems behind. But, if you have an unreliable internet connection or your property has Wi-Fi signal issues, then a wired CCTV could be a better solution. And if you want to install a large number of cameras then a wired CCTV system can be a cheaper option.

Are there any key features we should look out for when buying one?

Think about ease of set up, HD-quality video notification and recording capability, infrared night vision and two-way audio.

What can we do if we see something of concern?

You can set the camera up to notify you via an app if movement is detected. The camera will immediately start recording and you can simultaneously log in and view live. With two-way audio you can talk to whoever is in your home – so if you discover it’s just Sammy the dog making a noise, you can tell him to settle down and that you’ll be home soon!
