Designer Ali Miller has brought out a new collection of gold plates, aptly named ‘Memories Are More Precious Than Gold’ – and hopes her trademark teapots and tea cups will soon join the range.
Ali, 37, who lives with her husband and two children in north London, thanks TV detective Sherlock Holmes for her global success… ‘The production designer on the BBC1 series wanted an unusual tea service for Benedict Cumberbatch to use, and by chance, chose one of mine. It was used in January 2012, but I missed the episode. That night, I sold hundreds of tea services! Up until then, I had been selling one a week. Overnight, the entire range sold out.’ Sherlock used Miller’s ‘Home Sweet Home’ design, £80 (right), while other series featured her ‘Hampstead Heath’ and ‘Alice in Wonderland’ ranges. ‘People are comforted by memories of childhood,’ says Ali, ‘so I think vintage style will continue to be big news this year.’
