FOOD NEWS Table decoration, cherries and gin
In summer it’s lovely to decorate your outdoor dining table with some simple posies of garden flowers in jam jars or jugs. Why not continue the theme and include them in your drinks and foods too? Pansies, cornflowers, marigolds, sunflowers and nasturtiums are all edible, and the flowers of shrubby salvias are especially sweet and delicious. Use them, together with borage flowers or daisies, around and in desserts such as jellies, or create floral ice cubes to spruce up drinks. Just put clean, edible flowers into your ice cube trays, fill with water and freeze.
Sprigs of herbs, too, make beautiful decorations. Dill and fennel are particularly pretty and can be cut small enough to make herby ice cubes, or drop them, with slices of cucumber and strawberry, into your Pimm’s or mojitos.
Pick flowers from the garden – make sure you can identify them correctly, order from maddocksfarmorganics.co.uk or buy in store at Sainsbury’s.
