Well-placed illumination that highlights a garden’s special features adds a sense of drama. Lights for flower beds should be flexible, attached to long cables so that they can be moved to reflect seasonal changes in the planting, or as plants mature. Ideally, they should be concealed by foliage, revealed only after dark. Locate light switches indoors so they’re still convenient to reach in the depths of winter. When planning a lighting scheme, think about the intensity of different light sources – if possible, try out bulbs of varying wattages. A little light travels a long way, so don’t overdo it. Carefully consider the main viewing position of each feature so you don’t create unwanted glare. And fitting an exterior plug socket means you can easily add extra lighting, such as sparkling fairy lights, to set the mood for a party.
