EXPERT GUIDE GET YOUR LIGHTING RIGHT

-

‘Make sure lighting is part of your plan from the start, as retrospective planning can lead to compromise,’ advises Rohan Blacker, founder of Pooky. ‘Work out how you plan to use the space to help determine the type of lighting, and its placement.’ Rohan has the following tips: 1 Give yourself options for different activities and atmospheres: practical task lighting, such as downlights or strip LED lights, is great for cooking, while pendants or wall lights offer softer mood lighting. 2 Ambience is important and flexible lighting will help your room transition from a practical space to a place for relaxation. Dimmers are useful, especially in a multifunctional kitchen. If you opt for pendants over an island or worktop, consider putting them on separate circuits so you can control the atmosphere even further. 3 Understand your lighting design in relation to your kitchen units. If you have a strong directed light over a workstation, you might want to choose a non-reflective material for the worksurface to avoid glare, or matt cupboards to avoid reflections. 4 Use lights that are easy to keep clean – especially any that are close to cooking spots. Avoid using fabric and rattan as they will accumulate cooking smoke and grime that will be hard to remove.
