Does a garden room need planning permission?

Most will not need planning permission but it’s important to check the rules with your local planning office. What about insurance?

Steve Moores of Aston Lark (astonlark.com) advises:

 Garden offices need to be insured for fire, storm or flood damage.

 Many insurers limit the contents in outbuildings so you could be restricted by a figure as low as £1,000.

 Consider whether equipment is yours or your employers to make sure these items are covered. You may need a separate business policy, or to extend your home insurance.

 Working from home can often reduce the risk on your house insurance as there’s a lower risk of theft or a large escape of water claim, so your insurer should recognise this.
