INSIDER STYLE Before you start

Know the look you want but not sure where to start? Our resident interior designer Andrew Griffiths shares his insights

The bathroom is an important part of the home. Yes, it’s functional, but it’s also the place we start and end our day, so it should definitely add a bit of joy to our lives. After the kitchen, it’s also the area where we’re likely to invest the most money, so consider carefully what the space needs to deliver and how you want to feel when you step inside it.

To get all the elements right, careful planning is essential, so don’t rush. Spend some time to reflect on all of the following…

 Really think about your needs. Do you long to luxuriate in a bath, or are you more of a shower person? Be sure to design the space that works best for your lifestyle.  Size up your room. If you feel you may need help making the most of your space, it’s worth consulting a bathroom specialist or interior designer, or trying out an online visualiser (see opposite).

 Be clear on your budget. There are lots of elements to juggle, so knowing your limits can help you work out what to prioritise and where you might have to compromise.

 Carefully consider lighting. Don’t default to a ceiling full of downlights as your only lighting source, instead think about layers of light to create different moods, just as you would with any other room. Make sure you get the right IP rating too, appropriate for where the lighting will be positioned.

 Seek out inspiration on colours, textures and moods. This will help you work out a style that reflects you and how you want your room to feel, rather than just following current trends that will inevitably move on.
