‘OUR HARDWORKING BATHROOM NOW FEELS LIKE A SANCTUARY’ Traditional and modern work together like a dream

A mix of the traditional and modern have created a perfect family space

What were you hoping to create? A traditional room but with modern elements – a bright space that would suit the family and be a relaxing retreat. We also wanted a separate shower.

Did you get help planning the bathroom?

I worked with my friends Kirsty and Teddy, who have an interior design business, Cocoon Interiors, in Hove. They realised that we could fit in a shower if we moved the bath and the basin.

How did you decide on the look?

We wanted to have a luxurious, sophisticated feel. Cocoon created moodboards and I selected the things I liked and made my own edited board. We used wallpaper to add character. It’s a calm design and the muted pink sits well with the tiles.

The furniture is a mix of old and new…

Yes, I went for a traditional claw-foot bath and brushed-brass fittings. A friend runs a kitchen and bathroom company and mentioned the brand

Britton Bathrooms, which we loved. We chose a modern basin unit because we really needed storage, but we made it work with the traditional elements by choosing brushed-brass handles to work with the brassware in the room.

Were there any challenges?

It was hard to track down brushed-brass taps and impossible to find a brass shower trap. I’ve also discovered that brass is difficult to keep looking new because it discolours slightly and tends to get a limescale build-up. Water and a polishing cloth seem to be the best way of maintaining it.

What makes the room work well for you now?

The shower! We can have someone in the bath, and shower, and even at the basin at the same time.

How long did it take and what did it cost?

It took three weeks and it cost £4,550 in labour. We had an £8,000 budget, which went over by £860 as we felt it was important to spend more on certain things, such as the bath.
