‘In a coastal scheme with a mixture of textures such as bare wood and open-weave fabrics, a considered colour palette is an effective way to bring elements together,’ explains Anna Hill, brand director at Fenwick & Tilbrook. Here’s her advice for creating a seaside-inspired scheme…

1

Shades of blue and white can look quite different depending on the direction your room faces and the light it receives. South-facing spaces receive strong, clear natural light, so most tones will work well. You may choose to opt for clean, cooler shades to balance the intensity of light.

2

If your room is north facing and receives particularly cool light, opt for purple-toned blues and creamier whites with a hint of yellow to bring a little more warmth.

3

For an alternative to blue and white, be inspired by the wider coastal landscape to include sandy beiges, warm pebble greys and the soft grey green of feathery dune grasses. This will give your rooms extra depth and bring a modern twist to the traditional coastal look.

4

We recommend an eggshell for tongue-and-groove. Or if you prefer a more matt and chalky look, opt for emulsion paints that are extra durable and can be wiped down.
