CROP OF THE MONTH Radish RAPHANUS SATIVUS ‘BLUEMOON’

-

Radishes are among the easiest and most versatile crops to grow from seed in virtually any size of container. It might not seem the most exciting choice, but the Bluemoon variety has an unusual blue skin that adds an exotic look to stir fries, salads or used as a garnish. It has crunchy flesh and a mild flavour. Also, it suffers from few pests so is one of the most dependable vegetables.

SECRETS OF SUCCESS

 Grow in a sheltered spot in sun or partial shade and sow directly into a pot that’s at least 15cm deep.

 Make a line in the soil about

1.5cm deep and drop in one seed every 1.5cm. Cover with soil.

 Seeds will germinate within three to ten days and shoots will emerge.

 All radishes should be watered well, so keep the soil moist to ensure a crisp and crunchy crop.

 To avoid having too many at once, sow half a row every three weeks.
