If you’re testing a mattress it’s a good idea to try it on the type of bed base you will be using, for example a divan, sprung slats or solid slats, as the feel will be different on each.
As well as the width of the bed, consider the height. Some contemporary styles are very low, which can make a room feel larger, but they may be tricky to get out of! Higher styles create a feeling of grandeur, but will dominate the space more, so work best in larger rooms. ‘A cheap mattress is a false economy; you’ll end up disappointed and returning it. You spend a third of your life in bed, so make it count. Opt for the best you can afford – your back will thank you for it.’ Andrew Tyler, co-founder of Brook + Wilde
‘A mattress is like a piece of clothing,’ explains Adam Black from Button & Sprung.
‘It should fit your shape and weight – contouring your body to provide the right amount of support at key pressure points: hips, knees and shoulders.’
Is the access into your bedroom tricky? If so look for divan bases that come in two sections and bedframes that arrive flatpacked. Avoid oversized headboards, which can be awkward to manoeuvre.
