CROP OF THE MONTH Garlic

- Gardena bulb planter, £14.99, bakker.com

This is ideal for growing in a small space, and it’s versatile too. Plant bulbs from now until November and buy from a garden centre, as supermarket garlic is often treated to stop it sprouting. There are two types: hardneck varieties produce a flower bud in late spring called a scape. These have a deliciously mild flavour that works well in dishes such as pesto. Softneck garlic is better for warmer climates and doesn’t produce flowers. I tend to opt for hardneck as it’s easier to identify – when the leaves turn yellow, it’s ready to pick. Good varieties include elephant garlic (good for roasting), or Carcassonne white, which grows well in the UK.

SECRETS OF SUCCESS

★ Use soil-free growing compost and a pot with lots of room for roots to spread. Good drainage is essential. Place a layer of hydroleca (clay pebbles) at the bottom of the pot for drainage.

★ Use a pot that’s at least 20cm deep. Typically plant four cloves to a 20cm pot; six to a 30cm pot; eight-10 to a 40cm pot.

★ Plant as per packet instructions with pointed heads up and keep well watered.

★ Place in full sun for picking in summer.

★ It’s fun planning which bulbs to plant so your garden looks bloomin’ great next spring. And with a bulb planter, it couldn’t be easier to get them in the ground and at the right depth.
