HOW TO GROW YOUR OWN LIVING WALL

-

Planting a living wall – or vertical garden – is a great way to introduce lush greenery, especially where space is tight, such as on a balcony. ★ Most living wall systems are sold as kits and can be scaled up or down to suit your space. They’re simple to put together and can be planted up quickly and easily with flowers and herbs, then fixed to a wall.

★ A living wall also makes a lovely focal point in an outdoor seating area and can be used to camouflage an old shed or ugly wall. There are some environmental benefits too: not only will it attract wildlife but, when attached to an exterior wall, it also offers insulation and soundproofing.

★ It will need regular watering of course. You can buy an irrigation system that runs from a mains water source, or some kits come with a top box for filling with a watering can.

★ It’s a good idea to plan your planting on paper beforehand – this will make it easier to create an arrangement you’ll like.

★ Place smaller, compact plants at the top and larger ones towards the base to help ensure they all receive adequate sunlight. See Isabelle’s plant list for a living wall over the page. Follow Isabelle on Instagram @thebalconygardener
