THIS SPRING, RIP UP THE RULEBOOK AND PREPARE FOR IMPACT

-

As the seasons change, the main request I get is for low-maintenance planting. The list of low-care plants, sadly, isn’t that extensive, and reduces even further if you have tricky growing conditions to contend with.

This is where an eclectic, vintage-style garden, incorporating an informal mix of antique-looking pots in materials such as zinc and wicker, comes into its own. It’s a great base for a fuss-free display. Don’t worry about manicured plants, just go with whatever is at hand – the wilder look is very forgiving.

One way to create an impactful display is to take inspiration from wooded areas, where evergreen trees form a backdrop to lower level planting and one type of seasonal flower (yes, just one) in abundance. It’s another low-maintenance option – in fact when I first planted this style of garden 10 years ago, I didn’t realise what relatively little input was needed to produce such a great effect. The single flower source may seem a bit stark but it means it stands out as the star of the show. The benefit of this relaxed style equates to less work and definitely more time to enjoy it.
