ORDER AND BEAUTY

-

A potting shed is a creative space that can be both beautiful and practical. Keep attractive pieces out on display and hide anything garish or less than lovely.

Shelving is essential as somewhere to store pots, tools and plant labels. It also provides a place to style gardening items and other bits and bobs to create visual interest. Here, a pine shelf unit houses the prettiest items of gardening kit, as well as books and botanical prints, and a makeshift shelf, created by resting an old scaffolding plank on bricks, becomes the perfect spot to place a box of seed packets and a zinc bucket holding a handful of burgeoning bulbs.

If there is space, bring in a table and arrange a display of potted plants and other objects that you find appealing.

Having a shed or greenhouse also allows you to grow plants that need a warmer climate to thrive. The shed shown here is home to tomato seedlings and bulbs – you could even nurture a grapevine.

Plunge a few blossom-laden boughs from a crab apple tree straight into a bucket of water to create a seasonal display and make a feature of drying bulbs by grouping them together and tying with string. Add a parcel tag to identify each variety and hang them on the wall – pretty and practical.
