Discover the best scent for your space with tips by Nest New York founder Laura Slatkin
CITRUS
A well-balanced citrus scent in the kitchen or bathroom will allow the zesty, cheery freshness to shine without any dreaded ‘cleaning agent’ associations, says Laura. Think grapefruits and lemons combined with a hint of floral or woody notes for added depth to bring an energising and enlivening feel.
BOTANICAL
Our love for houseplants and gardening has led to a boom in uplifting, outdoorsy scents featuring notes such as tomato leaf, eucalyptus and cypress. Laura says they work beautifully in any rooms and are especially lovely for spaces where you eat and entertain as they won’t interfere with the food.
SPICY
Warm wafts of cinnamon, vanilla and nutmeg aren’t just for autumn. The combination of plush vanilla and woody notes such as sandalwood and driftwood is perfect in spring and summer too, explains Laura. These notes have a comforting effect, making them ideal for winding down in the evenings.
FLORAL
The scents of flowers are beautiful, but be careful when fragrancing tight spaces. Laura recommends a ‘modern, fresh floral with watery nuances’. Unless you’re a big fan of heady flowers or working in a bigger area, steer away from blowsy blooms such as lilies, hyacinths and gardenias as they can often be overpowering.
