PLANTING BETWEEN PAVING STONES

-

 What to plant? A fantastic choice for shady, moist areas is mind-your-own-business

(Soleirolia soleirolii). With little white flowers, sweet woodruff

(Galium odoratum) is good too, but it can take over.

For drier, warmer spots, use creeping thyme (Thymus serpyllum), and enjoy its wonderful fragrance when you step on it.

 Leave enough space for plants: 30-40mm between slabs for ground cover like mind-your-own-business; a minimum of 150mm for larger plants.  Remember that your plants need somewhere to stretch out their roots, so if you’re laying your slabs on hardcore, scrape this material out and add topsoil in the areas where you’re planting.

 Space your slabs so they’re comfortable to walk on. The average pace measures 700mm, so bear this in mind if you’re planning on using stepping stones.

 If you’re going to be planting mind-your-own-business in small cracks, it’s fine to break up the rootballs of larger plants into sections to fit them in.
