Colours of the season

- LOUISE PEARCE

While I never thought I’d say it, I’m really embracing the idea of bringing colour into my home now that autumn’s on the approach. We’re on the last leg of our (seemingly endless) renovation project and I’ve decided to introduce a pop of brightness into just one little nook or corner. It’ll have to be somewhere tucked away, maybe the downstairs cloakroom or the inside of the pantry. Something that offers an unexpected and uplifting surprise when you open the door.

My inspiration for this unplanned injection of colour? Our lead style story Hues to Fall For on page 26, which doesn’t hold back when it comes to the warm, rich shades of the season. Sarah Keady, our talented Style & Interiors Director, has curated some of the latest colour trends – deep berries, emerald greens, earthy terracottas and inky blues – and shows how to make them work in your home. There’s no doubt that they add style and elegance to any living space, so I’m looking forward to picking one for myself.

If you want proof that colour need not be restricted to the indoors, check out the verdant, tropical feel of Sam Jarvis’s city garden on page 132 and Deanna Harding’s love of dahlias on page 136. Both stories have got me thinking that once I’ve finished the house, I should start planning how to bring more joyful shades into the garden too. And, as all keen gardeners know, that will be a project that is never completed.
