‘We wanted a bathroom with a boutique hotel feel’

A couple have realised their dream of having a freestanding bath and walk-in shower

What sort of look were you were aiming for? Something with character and a boutique hotel feel. We intended to remove the old shower enclosure and add a freestanding bath and walk-in shower to create a stylish family bathroom, and we wanted a design that would be a bit different and unique to us.

How did you get started?

For design and installation, we worked with a specialist company – Simply Bathrooms in Surrey (simplybathroomsltd.co.uk). Before deciding on colours and products we spent a good few weeks reviewing different room layouts with them to get the best out of the space. Their 3D CAD designs were a great help – they really brought the ideas to life, which made it easier for us to choose what we wanted.

Any challenges during the process?

The room is very small and we’d initially been told we wouldn’t be able to fit in a freestanding bath as well as a walk-in shower, so we were thrilled when we were able to achieve a layout that enabled

us to have both. Simply Bathrooms also suggested ideas to help us maximise space, such as a pocket door and bifold shower screen.

You had one particular must-have…

Yes, it was the contemporary freestanding bath. It’s a super-sleek shape in stone resin – we absolutely love it. It takes centre stage under the window, so it’s a real feature of the room as well as being very practical for us as a family. The shower screen is designed so that we can fold it right back against the wall, which means we have plenty of space around the bath when we’re bathing the kids.

What do you like most about the bathroom? The whole room! As well as the bath and the bifold shower screen, we also love the tiling and the bold colours. We’re really pleased with the mix of the darker accent shades with the bronze brassware, and the navy herringbone tiles look better than we ever imagined – they have real wow factor alongside the softer grey terrazzo tiles. We both love dark navy, and although fashions come and go, it’s a colour we will never tire of.
