‘An unused loft is now a dream guest bedroom’

Thanks to clever planning, this stylish room has lots of storage and an office space

How did the project come about? Having lived in their Victorian terrace for four years, the owners Sarah and Mohammed decided to add a loft extension. Part of this space was to house a new guest bedroom, which they asked us to design. They called us in right at the start of the project so we could be involved at the planning stage, which allowed us to have some input into the layout.

What did you want to achieve?

Sarah and Mohammed’s main requirement was to make this a self-contained space for when friends and relatives come to stay. It needed to include a bedroom, as well as a study area that wouldn’t take up too much precious space. They therefore needed to incorporate smart storage solutions and were keen on the idea of concealed cupboards. This fitted in nicely with our plan to utilise the eaves, which would otherwise have been a dead area.

Tell us about the look you were going for?

Sarah and Mohammed love the properties shown in The Modern House estate agency and wanted their loft space to have the same feel. We knew that bespoke functionality was the way to achieve this.

Describe what work was done...

After boxing in the eaves, we copied the look for the sliding doors of the wardrobe and study area to create a unified feel. To provide better access, we incorporated a two-door entry to the eaves instead of just one. For the office space, we added a sliding door, which offers a streamlined look when closed.

Were there any must-have elements?

Our clients had bought a wooden headboard with hidden side shelves. To integrate it into the design, we painted it green, along with the wall panels, wardrobes and storage units. Keeping the walls and ceilings white gave a clean and simple look, and the bedding reflects this colour combo.

What did the owners think of the results?

They loved it! When family visited, they said the guest room felt like a chic hotel. Also, Sarah and Mohammed use the office space for work and love that their Zoom calls now have a cool backdrop.
