Decisions, decisions

- LOUISE PEARCE

Are you a doer or a procrastinator? When it comes to interior design, I’ve always been the latter. With so much choice out there, I find it hard to actually make a decision. Our current kitchen renovation project is a case in point. I ummed and aahed relentlessly on the flooring: warm wood or cool limestone? Having flipped and flopped for some time, we finally settled on limestone tiles and based the rest of the room’s colour scheme around the chosen smart grey hue. Then the tiles finally arrived and – surprise, surprise – they weren’t the exact shade we were expecting; still lovely, of course, but lighter than we wanted and therefore not quite right with the rest of the room.

What I’ve learned is: no matter how many moodboards and Pinterest boards I create, things can go wrong. (The upshot? I’m now poring over some affordable rugs to make the kitchen feel a bit warmer underfoot.) Because really, interior design is just trial and error. Our brilliant columnist Katie Mulloy has come to the same conclusion (p125). To overcome ‘too much choice syndrome’, she has accepted that getting it right can take time – the best things in life often do. If you need some help making your own decorating decisions, have a look at our feature on p118 – it has all the questions you need to ask yourself before tackling any interiors project.

We’ve got lots of other things to inspire you this month too, from how to actually live with white (p20) to new ways to make your walls the star of the show (p30). I hope you find something in the pages that follow to help you make a decision or two. Enjoy!
