How big can black holes get?

A black hole’s growth starts to slow at around 10 billion solar masses – one solar mass being the weight of our Sun. Black holes have a theoretical upper limit of 50 billion solar masses, at which point gas in the accretion disc – the halo formed by matter being sucked in by the black hole – surrounding the ultramassive object would begin to form stars.
