How does bulletproof glass work?

Bulletproof glass is usually made of one or more layers of toughened glass, combined with layers of slightly softer polycarbonate plastic material. Although a bullet still shatters the glass, the polycarbonate plastic slows the bullet down and usually stops it passing through, trapping it in a bulge.
