WHY DON’T EVERGREEN TREES HAVE LEAVES?

- Riki Iwasaki

Evergreen trees do have leaves, they’re just different. Rather than shedding their leaves at the end of the growing season like deciduous trees and hibernating for winter, evergreens keep their leaves all year round. Deciduous trees like oak are big, flowering plants. They have an annual cycle where they grow lush, green leaves; the leaves change into stunning red, orange and yellow colours; they lose their leaves and it all starts again. Evergreen leaves can be thicker and more of a needle shape, often with a waxy coat to reduce moisture loss.
