CAN OXYGEN BE SYNTHESISED ON MARS?
@iamtheredzone
NASA is currently testing the Mars Oxygen In-situ Resource Utilization Experiment (MOXIE) on Mars. It’s designed to produce oxygen from the Martian atmosphere and works by taking in carbon dioxide, which makes up 96 per cent of the planet’s gas, then splitting it electrochemically to create breathable oxygen and propellant for rockets and vehicles. However, this is just a stepping stone to a far-flung goal of having a human habitat on Mars. Martian habitats are still a huge technological leap to a self-sufficient Martian colony on a terraformed planet. This kind of advanced technology is several generations away from when we think the first human will set foot on Mars.
