The World Rally Championship
(WRC) is a global motorsport competition that made a groundbreaking switch to biofuel for its 2022 season. The WRC now uses a second-generation biofuel made from organic waste material, which is combined with synthetic fuel. The production process uses renewable energy and takes carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere thanks to carbon capture. It’s the first time that a fossil-free fuel has powered a world motorsport championship. This isn’t the only time you’ll see biofuel used in a high-performance situation, either. Formula 1 now runs with a ten per cent biofuel blend, and the aviation and shipping industries are increasing their usage. It’s even being used by space start-ups.
