How It Works

DENTAL DAMAGE

Dear

Can eating potato crisps damage your teeth? They are brittle but hard, so they can’t do your teeth any good, surely?

Stephen Conn

Eating potato crisps can damage teeth, but not for the reason you have suspected. Instead of damage due to the initial bite, crisps are mainly bad for our teeth because of their high starch content. The starch in crisps can get trapped between the teeth. This then turns into sugar and feeds bacteria, producing acid. After eating a whole packet of crisps, the acid produced in the mouth can last for a while and cause plaque buildup.
