How It Works

MAKE A BUBBLE SNAKE

Create your own bubble-blowing machine in this simple experiment

-

1 CUT THE BOTTLE

Taking your scissors and plastic water bottle, cut the bottom section off. You shouldn’t cut off more than half the bottle.

2 COVER WITH THE SOCK

Insert the cut-open end of the top half of the bottle into your sock. Use any socks that have lost their pair, or an old sock.

3 NEATLY FOLD

Push the sock right over the bottle so that there’s no sock hanging down. You can fold over any excess sock that extends past the bottle opening.

4 SECURE WITH TAPE

Using relatively strong tape, such as duct tape, secure your sock in place. This is mainly needed for the loose sock near the neck of the bottle.

5 POUR IN THE WATER

Fill up your shallow container with water. The volume of liquid will depend on how many bubbles you want to produce.

6 SQUEEZE IN SOME SOAP

Add the dish soap to the water in the container. This will need to be enough to create plenty of bubbles for the volume of water you’ve used.

7 MIX THOROUGHLY

Using your hand or a spoon, forcefully mix the dish soap into the water. Some bubbles should begin to form at the water’s surface.

8 DIP THE SOCK

Lower the sock end of your bubbleblowing machine into the water so that it’s submerged by a few centimetres.

9 BLOW THE BOTTLE

Using the opening of the bottle as a mouthpiece, gently blow into the bottle and watch as a bubbly snake is created. It’s important that you don’t suck any air in– you don’t want to eat the soap!
