Though the octopus stinkhorn (Clathrus archeri) – also known as devil’s fingers – looks like it sprouted from the Upside Down in the popular Netflix series Stranger Things, it was in fact introduced into European forests from Australia. At the beginning of its life, the fungus hatches from a slimy gelatinous egg, extending its crimson tentacle-like protrusion­s outwards.
