DEADLY ATTACK
Following the attacks on the Twin Towers in 2001, American Airlines Flight 77 struck the Pentagon. On the southwestern side of the building, the outside ring was hit first, but the plane continued to plough through the next two inner rings of offices before coming to a stop. This happened exactly 60 years after the Pentagon’s construction began. After the impact, the crash produced a large fire that continued to burn for 36 hours. Tragically, a total of 125 employees at the Pentagon lost their lives. The Phoenix Project was launched to repair this part of the Pentagon. By the time it was completed in February 2003, about $5 billion was spent on the reconstruction and renovation.
