Why does the grass grow in summer and not in winter?

Very simply, grass doesn’t grow as fast in winter largely because of the lower temperatures. To a lesser extent, lower light levels from less intense and shorter days also mean that the plant is much less metabolically active. Nutrients may be less available, and so what resources are being made are largely used to maintain the plant rather than significantly add to its growth.
