Stephanie impresses photography judges
KIRKLEES College student Stephanie Carlin impressed judges at this year’s British Institute of Professional Photographers (BIPP) Yorkshire Regional Awards by winning the overall Student category.
Stephanie, who studies at the college’s Batley School of Art, was crowned overall winner of the Yorkshire Regional Student Photographer of the Year award with her image inspired by the movie Black Swan.
Four other students on the BA (Hons) Contemporary Photographic Arts course also received merits for their images including Jenna Codd, Maria Newton and Melvin France.
Former student Chrissy Eastwood who is now a professional photographer won the Architectural category and also won Commercial Photographer of the Year.
Stewart Jackson, lecturer on the degree programme won two merits in the noncommissioned category.
The competition attracted entries from students and photographers which was hosted at the Wheelwright Centre in Dewsbury.
Judges Kevin Pengelly and David Taylor said they were inspired by the work they had seen and were particularly impressed by the quality of the final prints.
Katrina Whitehead, Award Leader BA (Hons) Contemporary Photographic Arts, said: “It was a fantastic evening, with nearly 50 photographers attending the event from all over the Yorkshire region.
“It is a great achievement that a Kirklees College student has won the overall Student category and that a former student has won two trophies.”
All winning student images went on display yesterday in the photography department at Batley School of Art’s end of year show ‘Create.’
