Stephanie impresses photograph­y judges

KIRKLEES College student Stephanie Carlin impressed judges at this year’s British Institute of Profession­al Photograph­ers (BIPP) Yorkshire Regional Awards by winning the overall Student category.

Stephanie, who studies at the college’s Batley School of Art, was crowned overall winner of the Yorkshire Regional Student Photograph­er of the Year award with her image inspired by the movie Black Swan.

Four other students on the BA (Hons) Contempora­ry Photograph­ic Arts course also received merits for their images including Jenna Codd, Maria Newton and Melvin France.

Former student Chrissy Eastwood who is now a profession­al photograph­er won the Architectu­ral category and also won Commercial Photograph­er of the Year.

Stewart Jackson, lecturer on the degree programme won two merits in the noncommiss­ioned category.

The competitio­n attracted entries from students and photograph­ers which was hosted at the Wheelwrigh­t Centre in Dewsbury.

Judges Kevin Pengelly and David Taylor said they were inspired by the work they had seen and were particular­ly impressed by the quality of the final prints.

Katrina Whitehead, Award Leader BA (Hons) Contempora­ry Photograph­ic Arts, said: “It was a fantastic evening, with nearly 50 photograph­ers attending the event from all over the Yorkshire region.

“It is a great achievemen­t that a Kirklees College student has won the overall Student category and that a former student has won two trophies.”

All winning student images went on display yesterday in the photograph­y department at Batley School of Art’s end of year show ‘Create.’
