Trevor Bedford dies
FORMER Fartown favourite Trevor Bedford has died.
He arrived at Huddersfield in September 1970 from Castleford in a deal which took Ian Van Bellen the other way, and went on to make 196 appearances over six seasons in the claret and gold jersey, the vast majority at full-back.
During his time at Fartown he scored 14 tries, as well as one goal in a memorable 9-0 home victory over Hull KR during the 1971-72 season.
Rarely injured, he played all but one game in the 1972-73 season, when his deputy in the game was legendary Australian coach Wayne Bennett, current boss at Brisbane.
His last game for Huddersfield was against Salford on April 9, 1976 – his 15th season in professional rugby league – and the previous season he had helped Fartown win the Second Division Championship, with 21 league wins and only five defeats.
Bedford’s first professional club was Dewsbury, who signed him from the neighbouring Shaw Cross Boys Club.
He then moved to Castleford and played for the England Under 24 team against France in Toulouse in 1965.
